A Massachusetts man was detained for driving the wrong way on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire, state police reported Monday.
Ronald Lerned, 62, of Lowell, Massachusetts, faces charges of reckless conduct, driving after revocation or suspension, third offense DWI, and defying an officer, according to state police. He was placed on preventative detention and will be arraigned at a later date in Littleton District Court.
At 10:55 p.m. Sunday, state police got a report of a vehicle going northbound in the southbound lanes near Exit 34C on Interstate 93 in Franconia.
Responding troopers discovered the driver, later identified as Lerned, in the vicinity of Exit 39, traveling directly at them in the high-speed lane, state police said. The first attempts to stop Lerned were fruitless.
Later, officers saw another vehicle driving southbound, immediately in front of the wrong-way motorist, according to state police. However, the southbound driver managed to evade the wrong-way vehicle.
Shortly after, Lerned came to a halt on the roadside and was arrested.
