A Man is in Custody Following a Swat Standoff in the La Jolla Neighborhood

SAN DIEGO — After a six-hour SWAT standoff in a La Jolla neighborhood on Tuesday, a man was taken into custody.

Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, the San Diego Police Department, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, and SWAT teams responded to reports of threats at a property on La Jolla Scenic Drive and Via Casa Alta, near the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial.

The police department stated that someone was in their car with a pistol and refused to get out.

Around 4:20 p.m., authorities were able to persuade the 20-year-old guy to throw the pistol out the window, and he was taken into jail without incident.

The suspect was sent to a hospital.

According to James Canning of the San Diego Unified School District, three schools in the area—Muirlands, La Jolla High School, and La Jolla Elementary—were briefly closed down at the request of the San Diego Police Department.

San Diego police closed many roads in the area, including La Jolla Scenic Drive S and Upper Hillside Drive. Residents were instructed to stay away from the area and shelter in place throughout the standoff.

All lockdowns and shelter-in-place requests have been removed.
