Florida Nurse Accused of Starving Medically Fragile Child, Charged with Neglect after Mother Checked Surveillance Cameras

Honk News (Cape Coral, FL) – A Florida nurse practitioner faces allegations of child neglect for reportedly failing to provide adequate nutrition to a child requiring constant medical attention.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, police took 62-year-old Kelly Rita Perrigo into custody following a report made by a woman from Cape Coral, Fla., in September, according to a statement from the Cape Coral Police Department.

A woman claims Perrigo falsely stated they provided food for her child. According to her home security footage, she thought that Perrigo was indeed discarding it, as stated.

A child in need of constant care due to serious medical issues is being looked after by Perrigo, among other nurses, who work 12-hour shifts, according to the mother’s statement to the police.

On September 14, the mother claimed that Perrigo stated the child had consumed all of their nighttime bottles, according to the police statement.

The mother stated that the home surveillance footage revealed a different story. Perrigo was reportedly seen attempting to feed the child for a duration of 2-5 minutes before placing the child in the crib and exiting the room with the bottle remaining full. The kitchen camera reportedly captured Perrigo with an empty bottle, according to the statement.

“The [mother] believed Perrigo would empty the bottle in the bathroom sink before going into the kitchen,” the statement said. Eventually, she said she learned that Perrigo had not fed the child since Aug. 17 — nearly a month earlier.

Footage reviewed by investigators aligns with the mother’s story.

The mother claimed that since Perrigo started working for them in February of last year, the child experienced serious health issues, including liver failure. The child showed signs of fatigue and experienced weight loss during this period.

Perrigo faces felony child neglect charges, according to police. Lee County Jail records indicate her release on a $50,000 bond. No plea or attorney details available in online court records.
