A teaching assistant in Virginia has been taken into custody following an incident where a student observed him engaging in inappropriate behavior at his desk. This marks the second staff member at the Fairfax County high school to encounter legal issues related to sexual offenses this academic term.
On October 11, David Scalea, 40, reportedly engaged in inappropriate behavior while seated at his desk in a classroom at Langley High School. A student witnessed the incident and promptly informed the school administrator, who in turn alerted the resource officer.
Scalea faced swift arrest and was charged with engaging in an obscene sexual display and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, both of which are classified as misdemeanors.
Scalea has been placed on unpaid suspension by Fairfax County Public Schools. Since 2020, he has served as a teaching assistant with FCPS.
As the school year is still in its early stages, Langley High School has already encountered serious issues, with two staff members facing charges related to inappropriate conduct involving minors.
Fairfax County Schools emphasized their commitment to conducting thorough background checks during the hiring process. Last year, the school district revealed plans to introduce new protocols for continuous background checks on all staff members.
