A standard traffic stop escalated dramatically when a driver, refusing to cooperate, attacked a police officer with a knife, stabbing him in the neck, as reported by investigators in Connecticut.
Officer Tim Wright was able to survive the attack, thanks to a sergeant who arrived just minutes later and rushed him to the hospital, according to a statement from Connecticut State Police.
A video from the department captures the shocking scene of the stabbing, with blood splattering onto the pavement, leaving the officer gasping and coughing as he stumbled.
On Thursday, Oct. 3, at approximately 1:30 p.m., police reported that Tyler Wilmot’s vehicle was pulled over on North Main Street in Woodbury for not displaying a registration plate correctly.
“As Officer Wright exited his patrol vehicle, it became apparent that the operator was verbally aggressive and refusing to comply with verbal commands,” officials said.
“A physical altercation ensued, during which the operator stabbed Officer Wright in the neck with a knife. As this was occurring, another Woodbury Officer, Officer John Covello, arrived on scene,” according to police.” The operator attempted to flee on foot. However, Officer Covello was able to successfully deploy his Taser, take control of the suspect and place him in handcuffs.”
Covello attempted to assist the fallen officer. Officials indicated that it was evident an ambulance might not reach the scene promptly.
“Recognizing the immediate need for a higher level of medical care, Woodbury Resident Trooper Sergeant Matthew Costella transported Officer Wright to Waterbury Hospital to expedite emergency medical attention,” officials said.
“Officer Wright is in stable condition at this time and is expected to make a full recovery.”
A 31-year-old suspect from Woodbury was hospitalized due to the use of a Taser and has since been released into police custody.
The following charges have been filed against him:
- Failure to display the registration plate
- Illegible license plate
- Operating a motor vehicle without a license
- Interfering with an officer/resisting
- Assault on a public safety officer

His bail was established at $3 million.
