Honk News (New York City, NY) – A mother faces arrest and charges related to the tragic death of her six-year-old daughter.
Karla Espinal, 26, hailing from Brooklyn, New York City, faces charges of assault and reckless endangerment following the tragic death of her daughter, who was discovered “unresponsive” in a bathtub by authorities at their residence on Friday, Feb. 7, as confirmed by the New York City Police Department.
“Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, the following individual was arrested and charged on February 8, 2025 at 1755 hours in the confines of the 75 Precinct,” police said.
Espinal faces serious allegations, including second-degree assault for recklessly inflicting significant physical harm, endangering a child, and second-degree reckless endangerment, as confirmed by the NYPD.
On Friday, February 7, authorities discovered a six-year-old girl “unconscious and unresponsive” in a bathtub filled with water at a residence in Cyprus Hills, Brooklyn, after responding to a 911 call around 1:30 p.m.
“Emergency Medical Services responded to the location and transported the female aided to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased,” police said in a previous statement.
A young woman was observed being escorted from the premises in handcuffs by law enforcement on Friday, as reported by neighbor Helen Cunningham. She reported to the outlet that she witnessed a man, thought to be the girl’s father, accompany the girl in the ambulance.
Cunningham stated that the girl resided at the house with her parents and one or two other children after relocating there a few months prior, according to NYT. She mentioned that law enforcement had returned to the home for the second time this week.
Gina Khau, who lives next door, reported hearing “someone screaming” from the property at approximately 4:00 a.m. local time, according to the New York Post. She said of the family, “I see that they are happy. I see the mother loved the girl … and [the father] is a nice guy.”

According to neighbor Vincent Abad, the girl was often spotted with her parents.
The cause of death will be established by the Medical Examiner.
“The identity of the deceased is pending family notification,” said police.
