Waterbury, CT- A mother and stepfather in Waterbury, Conn. have been taken into custody after an inquiry into a 6-month-old baby who sustained serious burns from falling onto an electric heating pad after rolling off a bed.
Authorities reported that they were alerted by personnel at Saint Mary’s Hospital on October 24 after a baby boy was brought to the emergency room suffering from second and third-degree burns.
Keturah Williams, 36, and Damon Martin, 51, the child’s mother and stepfather, were present at home when the child sustained injuries.
Authorities suspect that the infant was by himself in a bedroom when he fell off the mattress and became trapped between the bed and the wall while lying on a heating pad. It was found that Williams and Martin postponed getting medical help for the baby as they continued to use drugs and alcohol.
A boy was moved to Connecticut Children’s in Hartford and later placed in the care of the state Department of Children and Families after receiving treatment.
Two additional children present in the home during the incident were also placed in the custody of DCF.
On Tuesday, Williams and Martin surrendered to authorities and faced charges related to endangering a child’s well-being and cruelty to individuals.
