4-Year-Old Son Found Malnourished, Freezing, and Burned in New York City Apartment; Mother Charged After Boy’s Death

A mother from New York City has been taken into custody and faces charges following the tragic death of her 4-year-old son. This comes just one day after the child was discovered in a state of severe malnutrition and exposure, with a burn mark on his chest, as reported by law enforcement officials.

Nytavia Ragsdale, 26, faces charges of criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child following the tragic death of a young boy, Jahmeik Modlin, who was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, according to authorities.

On Sunday evening at approximately 7:40 p.m., a mother reached out for assistance, reporting that she found her son unconscious and unresponsive in their apartment near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., according to police and law enforcement sources.

Upon arrival at the hospital, medical personnel discovered the burn mark and assessed that the child was experiencing malnourishment and hypothermia, according to sources.

Tragically, Little Jahmeik was declared deceased early on Monday morning. Ragsdale was taken in for interrogation prior to the two charges being filed.

She walked out of the 32nd precinct station on Monday night, her red hoodie pulled over her head, her gaze fixed downward in silence.

According to authorities, Jahmeik had three siblings who were all under the age of 8, but it seems they were not present at home when their brother was taken to the hospital.

Authorities have indicated that there were earlier reports of incidents within the apartment where the boy was discovered, though the specifics of those reports remain uncertain.
