After doctors at Children’s Mercy Hospital found serious injuries to a 3-month-old girl on Saturday, a man from Kansas City is facing felony charges of child abuse or neglect.
The girl was in the care of 29-year-old Johnny C. Bonacorso from Friday night into Saturday morning, as documented in the court records.
The youngster was taken to Children’s Mercy Urgent Care by her mother on Saturday morning when she noticed bruises on her.
Court papers indicate that the girl was then sent to Children’s Mercy Hospital in critical condition.
In addition to a broken femur and clavicle fractures on both sides of the baby’s torso, charging papers state that she suffered brain damage.
Several additional bodily areas also showed severe damage during the tests.
Although she has no involvement with the case, Lisa Mizell, CEO of the Child Protection Center, has stated that her agency assists families and infants who have been victims of abuse.
“There’s a depravity to doing that to an infant that is unimaginable to most people, and they’re dependent on you for everything in their life,” she said.
“People think, ‘Oh, it’s a baby. They’ll forget.’ They don’t. This is a trauma that will be part of their DNA that you have to help them figure out how to cope with it,” she continued.
According to Mizell, her agency is here 24/7 to assist grieving families.
This happens when Bonacorso enters a not guilty plea.
After being informed of his Miranda rights, he refrained from speaking with the detectives.
A $50,000 bond is keeping Bonacorso in jail. A public defender has been requested by him.
October 15 is when he is next due in court.
