3 Massachusetts Teens Dead, 1 Critical After High-Speed Crash in Florida

Three Massachusetts high school students died and another remains in critical condition following a high-speed crash on U.S. Highway 98 in Walton County, Florida on April 21.

Tragic Crash Details

Around 9:30 p.m., Jimmy McIntosh, 18, was driving at approximately 110 MPH in a Hyundai SUV on a highway with a 65 MPH speed limit. McIntosh’s car collided with a tractor-trailer making a U-turn at about 20 MPH, driven by 19-year-old Kadyn DeWayne Ainsworth. The crash caused the SUV to cross the highway and stop in a nearby wooded area. The vehicle’s roof was torn off in the collision. McIntosh and Hannah Wasserman, 17, were pronounced dead at the scene. Passenger Maisey O’Donnell, 18, died later at the hospital. Another passenger is still in critical condition. Ainsworth and his passenger survived without injury. Testing for drugs and alcohol was done on Ainsworth, but McIntosh was not tested.

Community and Official Reactions

Lieutenant Jim Beauford of Florida Highway Patrol said the crash is under criminal investigation but no charges will be filed until it concludes. Dr. Gary Howerton, a witness, said McIntosh’s car “blew by me like I was standing still” and that the crash “shouldn’t have happened.” O’Donnell, a state diving champion headed to Williams College, was remembered by her coach as “humble with a kind heart” and a top athlete. Her boyfriend shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, calling her “not just the love of my life but my best friend.”

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and the high speeds involved. The Florida Highway Patrol is emphasizing a thorough investigation over quick conclusions to ensure justice for those affected. Community members mourn the loss of promising young lives cut tragically short.
