2-year-old Faced Brutal Child Abuse at the Hands of Foster Mother in New Mexico; Mother Finally Sentenced

Albuquerque, NM- A woman from Albuquerque was given a sentence for child abuse on Friday, while her husband, a former officer of the Albuquerque Police Department, is currently awaiting his trial.

Jacquelyn and Nicholas Schmidt took on the role of foster parents to a two-year-old boy in 2021. Unfortunately, after just four months, the child was taken out of their care.

Medical professionals observed multiple indications of mistreatment, ranging from extensive bruising to fractures. According to court records, Jacquelyn Schmidt openly expressed her difficulties as a foster mom through text messages.

Additionally, it was revealed that she alleged the child was causing harm to himself, when in reality, she was engaging in actions such as pinching, pushing, and spanking. Both parents failed to report any of the boy’s injuries to the New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department.

“From the very beginning to say things like, I hate this child, I hurt this child, I want to hurt this child, she was the adult. She, regardless of what her co-defendant and husband did or didn’t do, she should have gave the child back. She should have gotten help,” said Prosecutor Savannah Brandenburg-Koch.

Jacquelyn Schmidt has admitted to three counts of child abuse and failing to report child abuse. She received a three-year prison sentence. In June 2023, her husband was terminated from APD after serving six years with the department.

He submitted an appeal to the Personnel Board of the department. He entered a plea of not guilty to four charges of child abuse and failure to report child abuse.
