Tampa, FL- The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reported that during Hurricane Debby on Monday morning, a tree crashed into a mobile home in Florida, crushing the 13-year-old kid to death.
Upon arriving at the house at approximately eight in the morning, deputies were informed that the teen had been “crushed inside the home” and that a tree had fallen.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with this family as they deal with this tragedy. We encourage everyone to use extreme caution as they begin to assess and clean up the damage. Downed powerlines and falling trees are among the many hazards. One life is too many. Please be safe,” the sheriff’s office said.
A semi-truck driver died after losing control on a wet roadway, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, as Debby made landfall in the Tampa area early on Monday morning.
The truck eventually teetered on a guardrail on Interstate 75 before toppling over, according to the authorities. Then the taxi sank into the Tampa Bypass Canal. When rescue personnel recovered the semi, they discovered the driver, a 64-year-old Mississippian, dead inside the taxi.
As of early Monday afternoon, there have been no further reports of Debby-related deaths.
As Debby approached Florida’s Big Bend Region late on Sunday night, it strengthened into a hurricane. However, after reaching landfall on Monday, it was downgraded to a tropical storm.
Near Steinhatchee, a little hamlet on Florida’s northern Gulf Coast with less than a thousand residents, the hurricane made landfall as a Category 1 storm. The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that it was traveling 10 mph northeast at its maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.
Although the storm made landfall in one of Florida’s least populous areas, forecasters issued a warning that severe rains could cause devastating floods in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida.
About 20 miles separate the small village where Hurricane Debby made landfall from the area where Hurricane Idalia made landfall less than a year ago.
