In the world of acting, you tend to either be on your way up or on your way down. And while many in Hollywood are one film away from making it big, a similar number could see their career ruined simply by taking a role not suited to them.
In this article, we’ll look at some of the actors and actresses whose careers are heading in opposite directions, including the ones who should stick with what they’re already doing and those that should twist and do something new.
Stick or twist?
This phrase comes from blackjack, where players decide to ‘stick’ or ‘twist’ in the hopes of getting a better hand. And those fundamentals of the game have become a true metaphor for life – do you stick with what you have, or twist in the hope of landing something better?
The aim of the game is to get to 21, or as close as you can – in fact, as you can read if you log on to play some live blackjack online, the game is sometimes still referred to as 21, which is a translation of its original 18th-century French name, vingt-et-un. For that reason, large amounts can be won or lost on the turn of the card and, in that sense, it’s actually not that different to the dilemmas we face day-to-day away from the glamour of the card table: when thinking about whether to change our job, where we live or even just our hair color, each of us ‘stick or twist’ on aspects of our life more often than you might think.
In this article, we reveal the stars of Hollywood who should stick and those that should twist in the months ahead. For some, it’s all guns blazing and onto the next big project, while for others there are big changes needed.

Kaitlyn Dever – stick
It’s now six years since Dever was named as one of Variety magazine’s ten actors to watch, having played major roles in films like The Front Runner and The Spectacular Now. Five years later and the 23-year-old captured imaginations with her role in Booksmart, while also appearing in Netflix’s Unbelievable. Dever is undoubtedly onto a good thing and should keep doing what she’s doing. Stick!
Daniel Craig – twist
Craig will hang up the tuxedo as Bond following the release of No Time To Die. The English Actor has portrayed 007 since appearing in Casino Royale in 2006. Like many of his predecessors, Craig may find it tough to shake the secret agent label and needs to twist to find something new, and big, quickly.
Kelvin Harrison Jr – stick
Another break-out star who seems to be doing everything right is Waves actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. Harrison earned plaudits for his role in Luce, while he was also impressive in earlier roles in Monsters and Men, as well as Mudbound. He will appear in Covers, set for release in Spring, and his star is expected to rise even higher during the latter months of 2020.
Kit Harington – twist
Harington burst into prominence as one of the leading faces of fantasy epic Game of Thrones. Since the final season finale, Harrington has found work providing the voice in the latest How to Train Your Dragon instalment, and he will also appear in The Eternals this year. But the 33-year-old may need something much bigger to scale the heights he did in Westeros. It’s time to twist.
Thomasin McKenzie – stick
Fresh from her outstanding performance in Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, McKenzie is another fresh face that appears destined for big things. McKenzie will appear in Lost Girls this year, alongside Amy Ryan and Gabriel Byrne, and in September she’ll star in Last Night in Soho. Insiders predict 2020 could be a very big year indeed.
Taika Waititi beautifully captures the overwhelming feeling of freedom with one of the most heartfelt endings to a film we saw in 2019. Thomasin McKenzie & Roman Griffin are absolute superstars…
