Throughout Season 5, Marco Inaros made huge moves from the title of the Belt while flying the flag of the new Free Navy. He has overseen the bombardment of Earth, ensuring three stealth tech-coated asteroids hit the individual homeworld; he ordered that the assassination of Fred Johnson along with also the acquisition of the end Protomolecule sample; and he’s sold the sample into a Martian breakaway fleet in exchange for ships and assistance in his latest attack in Season 5, Episode 10, “Nemesis Games” – the shooting of Medina Station and following total control over Ring Space.
It seems that Marco’s work throughout Season 5 has all been to create a diversion while he goes after his main prize, Medina Station. While the remainder of the solar system is still looking another way, recovering from Marco’s past attacks, the completely free Navy attacks the ships which are guarding the Sol Gate entrance to Ring Space. However, the coordinated nature of the attack shows how long he has been planning the action, and how prevalent Marco’s influence is.
Since Marco’s Free Navy converges about the Sol Gate, the boat that is guarding the entry is struck by busted meteor debris, suggesting Earth wasn’t Marco’s only target when sling-shotting his stealth-coated rocks. As the ship feels the effect of the debris, the completely free Navy and rogue Martian fleet begin shooting the ship’s front. The ship is also struck by incoming fire which originates from within Ring Space, implying Marco has representatives either on Medina Station or cried around it. The relentless attack destroys the ship, clearing the way for Marco’s Free Navy and the rogue Martian fleet to go into Ring Space unobstructed.
On account of the transmission delay, the entire attack is witnessed three hours later by recently appointed UN Secretary-General Chrisjen Avasarala and everybody else on Luna. They have to accept that it is too late to organize a reply because everything they’re seeing has already occurred and Marco has obtained control of Medina.
Furthermore, this is the first time Earth’s authorities have noticed that a part of Mars’ fleet has broken away and become an independent body. This breakaway fleet appears to include Admiral Sauveterre, the Martian Admiral who had been giving a lecture on how best to control Ring Space within an asymmetrical choke point in Season 5, Episode 2, “Churn,” however his boat mysteriously melts away within Ring Space after the participation ends.
With full control of Ring Space, Marco and also the Free Navy now have jurisdiction over all transit and from the settlements past. Some of these new settlements are not yet self-explanatory and rely heavily on shipments out of Earth or Mars as they have been able to harvest out of the alien worlds. Moreover, after his attack on Earth, Marco required that Earth and Mars confine themselves to their respective atmospheres and will treat any actions against this directive as an act of aggression. Thus Marco has effectively made the Free Navy vital to the survival of those planets outside the Ring Gates, setting the platform for an engagement within Ring Space at some point during Season 6. If which weren’t enough, before Sauveterre’s disappearance, he had been spotted talking to Dr. Cortazar concerning the Protomolecule construction orbital platforms, so Season 6 also promises more Protomolecule shenanigans.
