US basketball legend Kobe Bryant has died in a helicopter crash in California


US Football legend Kobe Bryant has died in a helicopter crash in California, sparking an outpouring of grief from fans around the globe.

41 Bryant, and his daughter Gianna, 13, were among the nine killed when the aircraft came in Calabasas.


There were no survivors from Sunday’s crash that occurred in the weather.

A five-time NBA winner, Bryant, played during his career for the LA Lakers and is regarded as among the most important players in the history of the game.

Tributes from fellow sports celebrities and actors, politicians have been pouring in, many expressing shocks. Seconds of silence has been detected in basketball games across the US.

Fans gathered in a makeshift memorial for Bryant in front of the Los Angeles Lakers’ scene in the Staples Center on Sunday, putting basketball and flowers in memory of this star. ‎

Bryant was also remembered in the Grammy Awards that were held in the Staples Center.

“We’re all feeling crazy sadness at the moment,” said Grammys host Alicia Keys.

“Because earlier today Los Angeles, America, and the whole wide world lost a hero. We are standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant constructed”

The NBA issued a statement saying that it had been”devastated by the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna”.

“For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with a complete dedication to winning,” it stated.

There have been tributes from as far away as the Philippines – in which a new basketball center called after Bryant opened only hours before his departure – and Italy, where Bryant spent part of his youth.

Luca Vecchi – mayor of Reggio Emilia, the town where Bryant dwelt – paid tribute to the star on Facebook, writing the city will remember him forever.
