Plotline Of The Handmaid’s Tale

A dystopian society where the fertility rates have dropped due to sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution, The Handmaid’s Tale revolves around fertile women who are forced into sexual service in order to up the fertility rate of the society.

The government of Gilead was established after the Second Civil War in the former United States. The Handmaid’s as well as much of the society is divided into different classes assigning them duties and brackets of freedom. 

The women are mistreated and are constantly objectified. They are treated as the property of the state. One of the handmaid’s, June Osborne, renamed as Offred is determined to survive in this power hungry society and reunite with the daughter who was taken away from her.
