The Netflix series exploded in a major way with an extensive celebration of 80s pop culture. Stranger Things is under insensitive scrutiny, and a recent trailer for the fourth season has caught the imagination of enthusiasts.
The teaser, titled Russia with Love, reveals another Russian facility with a group of prisoners working on the train track.
A dull shot, accompanied by a somber Russian chanting, slowly bends down to reveal that one of the workers is, in fact, Hawkins’ former police chief, Jim Hooper.
When he takes off his traditional Russian headgear, he reveals a new look. With the removal of his signature mustache, the trailer announced that the hopper’s head was fully shaved.
Sporting a tantalizing shot of the hopper, a new bald style, and a strangely empty expression, The Stranger Things fan community is set up with a new theory for the upcoming season.
A general theory is emerging that Hopper has been brainwashed by the Russians in some way, either to turn them into mindless drones or for some other nefarious purpose.
A fan took to Twitter and asked: “Did the Soviets do a brainwash hopper or something? This trailer looks like a hopper, a man Boris!”
Hopper is infamous, but from the trailer, it seems as if he is suspiciously well integrated into his new surroundings.
At the end of last season with Joey Byers (Winona Ryder), XI (Millie Bobby Brown) leaves Hawkins with his powers, possibly making him vulnerable to attack by America’s Cold War rivals.
During the second and third seasons of Stranger Things, Hopper becomes the paternal figure for XI, so this theory suggests a tragic formula for the upcoming chapter.
The theory is certainly an example of when a devoted fan took Reddit before the trailer was released.
