Separate New Year’s Eve traffic accidents on Maui claimed the lives of a motorcycle rider and a moped rider

Two fatal traffic accidents took place on Maui one in Kaanapali and the other one in Wailuku on New year’s eve.

Just 10 mins after the New year had begun.

A 51-year-old motorcycle rider suffered death after an accident on Honoapiilani Highway near Kekaa Drive,  Kaanapali.

Maui police reported that he lost control and landed upon the road, while he was heading south on the Honor Piirani Highway at a really high speed.

He slipped at the exit line of Noah Piirani Highway into a northbound lane where he got hit by an SUV.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Also, he was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the SUV, Lahaina, 57, and his three older passengers were not injured. Fortunately, they were all wearing belts.

Police believe speeding has led to an investigation into whether alcohol and drugs were the cause of the collision.

In Wailuku, a 32-year-old moped died in an accident on the Keharani Mauka Parkway north of Komooa Road. It happened shortly after 1:45 a.m. Saturday, January 1st.

The moped passenger lost control of the moped and was thrown out of the moped road after hitting a curb several times.

He died at the scene. He was also not wearing a helmet.
