Though revolving around the Van der Linde gang’s experiences, the Red Dead Redemption series does not give us much insight into the backstory of the gang’s leader Van Der Linde or how the gang was formed which gives us a valid reason to hope that it’s a sequel is more of a prequel and focuses on the Dutch’s narrative.
‘Red Dead Redemption’ gave it’s players a chance to step into the shoes of John Marston as he hunts down his old gang members.
The sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2 acted as a prequel and gave us some clarity about the gang’s breakup through the eyes of a new protagonist Arthur Morgan.
Though it gave us some hint about the past of the gang, it did not provide any clue as to how the Van Der Linde was formed in the first place.
As of today, none of the Red Dead Redemption matches have clarified the fall of the deadly ringleader from feared and admired to delusional and inconsistent. The Dutch were picking out gang members based on a blueprint but many of the members were taken in by him when they tried to rob or con him.
Red Dead Redemption 3 Main Character
Why Dutch should be the central character, The sequel can be a chance to make the picture clearer and also bring in the loved characters of the past like John or Arthur Morgan and know more about how they established connections with the gang.
John and Arthur were teenagers when the Dutch took them in so bringing their younger selves would be a good way to speak of their pasts. The main focus however should be on how the Dutch became an unpredictable and delusional leader from a very feared one especially before the gang disbanded.
Not only do we need to know about the past and thus, the idea of the prequel but with the death of most of the prominent gang members, moving forward would only mean the entry of a new character.
Also, keeping in mind the drastic change in the wild west in the 20th century, it would be better for RDR3 to stick to the western motif if it moves back in time.
As Red Dead Redemption 2 had already acted as a prequel to the original RDR, the RDR3 prequel to the prequel will not be out of place.
Though we can find convincing reasons as to why RDR3 should focus on the starts of the Van Der Linds, we know how long it takes to develop Rockstar’s matches. With no confirmation about a third installment, players will only have to wait patiently for RDR3.
