The Netflix’s new documentary Murder To Mercy showcases the life of Cyntoia Brown. It also depicts the #MeToo movement’s contribution to freeing Cyntoia. The documentary covers all the aspects of her life. It was released in April 2020 on the streaming platform Netflix.

Brown was sentenced to death in the year 2004 (then 16 years old) for killing a person in self-defence against sexual assault. She was accused of murder and was portrayed as an unstable prostitute in the court. The documentary also shows the early life of Cyntoia Brown. It depicted her birth mother Georgina Mitchell and shows how Brown was adopted by Ellenette Brown at the age of 2.
Brown’s case took over the national headlines in November 2017. When a law was changed according to which no minor could be charged and sentenced as prostitutes. Later various reports exposed Harvey Weinstein as a sexual predator. Just after that when #MeToo became trending, the #FreeCyntoiaBrown was also in the trending list.
The case got more prominence when celebrities like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian took Brown’s case to their Twitter handles. Six months after #MeToo, Brown’s case received a hearing with the Tennessee Board of Parole. She received quite a strong testimonial support and ultimately Cyntoia Brown was granted clemency in January 2019.
