Fans have been patiently waiting for sequels to arrive ever since, and while the filmmaking team behind the franchise has been taking its time, they have some absolutely gigantic plans for the future.

James Cameron conceived the idea for the first Avatar about 15 years before it came out. However, he needed to wait for technology to catch up to his vision, and the sequels required even more technological advancements. Cameron and his team almost spent a year and a half just to develop the required technology to allow the underwater performance capture scenes. Cameron has kept no secret of his decades-long fascination with underwater life. And fortunately, we can now see that his crew’s efforts have paid off. Cameron talked about the Avatar sequels’ underwater scenes in an interview with Yahoo last year.
With films production currently shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s been some question as to whether Avatar 2 will be able to make its release date in December 2021, given the intensity of the project. However, currently, for the time being, the film is sticking with that date and continuing “virtual” production on its many, many VFX elements remotely. Meanwhile, the Avatar franchise’s social media promoters continue to hype up the anticipation by releasing behind the scenes images from the set.
The latest photos in question were shared to the official Avatar Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. In one image, we can see Cameron sitting on a rig which has been constructed around the perimeter of a pool as actors and camera operators float below him. In the second image, we get a closer view of Cameron directing, with the waterline bisecting the photo and revealing the actors are sitting on pool noodles, ostensibly so they don’t get tired treading water before they have to film.
This underwear depicting image set is just one of two recent posts featuring new Avatar 2 images. In the latest tweet from April 29, Avatar fans were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at Avatar stars Sigourney Weaver and Joel David Moore, who play Grace and Norm respectively, in between filming. The latest photos from Avatar 2 have helped keep fans updated and intrigued by the long-in-the-works sequel to 2009’s Avatar, especially since we won’t actually get to see the first of four planned sequels until December 2021.
By filming the scenes this way, Cameron’s intention is to bring a heightened sense of realism to Avatar 2’s underwater scenes. It’ll be quite interesting to see what the oceans of Pandora actually look like in Avatar 2.
