“We believe two workers lost their lives as a result of this explosion,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a news conference Friday evening.

Two other people were hauled by the Houston Fire Department to a hospital using non-life-threatening injuries, and 18 other people”self-transported” to hospitals with injuries that are likewise not life-threatening, Turner said.

“That is in essence a disaster area,” Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo stated of the neighborhoods around the production center.

The explosion happened in a building at Watson Grinding and Manufacturing, which has been since 1972 in Houston, the mayor said.

“We’re saddened by the tragic departure of our coworkers, and our deepest sympathies are with their families for their deep reduction,” the company said in a statement through its lawyer Friday night.

It said it would collaborate with agencies investigating the crash.

The company provides thermal-spray coatings for equipment in industries and makes valves, according to The Associated Press.

Authorities said that the propylene, which dissipates in the atmosphere was being released by detectors in the building. Fire main Samuel Peña said later that the valves were secured.

“There is not any hazard with the air quality,” he explained.

Frank Flores and Gerardo Castorena were killed in the explosion, the fire chief said. And the police chief said that as much as their families” were hurting, they wanted to express to the neighborhood their appreciation no additional persons expired.”

There was a majority ruined, with a few knocked off their bases and buildings near the explosion site and nearly 200 houses were hunted, fire officials said. 1 city official said a number of the homes will be uninhabitable for months.

“This is a significant, important explosion,” explained Peña, that hopes investigators to be on scene for several days.

“We suspect certain things as far as what might have happened,” however, the section is not ready to release that information until investigators have a certain cause and origin, Peña said. The Fire Department is also searching at the website through its documents for the inspection history.

The scene appears”like a bomb has gone off,” U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson, a Democrat who represents Houston, stated Friday night, noting the community’s resilience.

“People that were thrown from their beds are all moving boxes,” Jackson said. “That’s, of course, a miracle. And we experienced a wonder from the timing of the explosion, due to the prospect of a greater loss of life”

Jackson said Watson Grinding and Manufacturing is a good neighbor, but she wants to be certain that”was done to ensure that there was knowledge of the compounds.”

Residents in a nearby neighborhood in the northwestern region of the city advised NBC affiliate KPRC in Houston the explosion blew out windows and damaged garage doors.

“It knocked us all out of our bed, it was so powerful,” Mark Brady, who lives in the area, said. “It busted out every window in our home. Everyone’s garage door was busted by it around here. … it is a war zone over here.”

A criminal investigation opened into the explosion, as part of its protocol. The U.S Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives at Houston stated in a tweet It Is assisting police in the investigation.

“We have no reason to believe, we have no proof that terrorism is concerned, that a criminal act is concerned,” authorities said. “For those who have this type of incident, part of our protocol would be to run a criminal investigation.”
