The His Dark Materials season 1 finale proceeds with an intriguing mix of passionate minutes and significant fight scenes – beginning with Lyra at long last getting the opportunity to discuss with her dad and some time with Roger.
Lyra needs to return home. She attempts to give the alethiometer to Asriel but is told he didn’t want/need it. She challenges him about being her dad, and regardless of some contacting minutes, and a few exchanges about Dust and the Magisterium, she discloses that she simply needs to take Roger home – and keep the name the bears gave her instead of his. She and Roger have a sweet minute where they talk about returning home and keeping each other as a family since they have nobody else.
Asriel explained to Lyra that he had to seek out Dust to understand and destroy it and for that he needed to break open the sky and dive in for that he needed a great deal of power and energy. He didn’t want to kill his own child Lyra for that so he kills Roger to use the energy.
Although Lyra had planned to Return home with Roger she was heartbroken knowing that Roger is dead. She further decided with Pantalaimon to save Dust as they believe that it the bad adults, the kidnappers, and the murderers hate Dust which means the Dust is not bad. Asriel planned to destroy Dust so they go after him not to support him but to stop him from doing so.
The final scene shows Lyra entering the window seat in the shy, not knowing where to go. Both Asriel and Lyra were in the same mission, just against one another. Hence on a lot of levels, the series is father versus daughter.
