In the public vote, the 19-year-old from Bromley defeated Olympic diver Tom Daley and swimmer Adam Peaty into second and third place, respectively.

Her incredible run as a qualifier to become the first British woman to win a grand slam since 1977 made her a strong favorite.

After testing positive for COVID last week while in Abu Dhabi for a competition, Raducanu delivered her speech from self-isolation.

“It’s such an honor simply to be among these candidates,” she added.

“This year has been crazy thanks to all of the fans and votes,” she continued. “The enthusiasm I had this year playing in front of my home audience at Wimbledon was something I’d never felt before.”

The teen’s US Open victory, in which she didn’t drop a set, propelled her to prominence and established her as one of tennis’ most marketable stars.

She also made a strong showing at Wimbledon, although she was forced to withdraw in the fourth round due to lung problems and dizziness.

The Sports Personality shortlist also included boxer Tyson Fury, footballer Raheem Sterling, and Dame Sarah Storey, the country’s most decorated paralympian.

Only roughly 50 carefully invited visitors attended the Salford ceremony, which was held without the customary crowded studio audience of sports celebrities.
