Commonwealth Day: History
At the ending of the nineteenth century, when the British Empire is at its top, Empire Day is first initiated in Canada. The holiday falls on the last school day before Queen Victoria’s birthday i.e., 24th of May.
The holiday gains fame across the empire succeeding the demise of Queen Victoria in 1901. The terror of the First World War changes how the holiday should be enjoyed and with it turning more into a day of recall.
With the rush for independence in the late 1950s, the British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan make a declaration that Empire Day will be transformed to Commonwealth Day. In 1976, the date of the holiday shifts to the Second Monday in the month of March. This date is selected as no Commonwealth country has a public holiday on that very day and nearly all the countries have school session.
The Commonwealth Day is established on 11th of December, 1931.
