A new production listing reveals Marvel’s Captain Marvel 2 starring Brie Larson starts shooting in London and Los Angeles on May 31. The sequel will be directed by the Candyman reboot’s 31-year-old director Nia DaCosta. Captain Marvel directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden openly supported DaCosta carrying over the director’s seat from them, and it seems as if things are moving forward swiftly on the sequel. Larson will of course return, together with Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel.
Captain Marvel 2 will be set in the current day, as opposed to the 1990s setting of the first movie, and will happen after the events of Avengers: Endgame, which saw Captain Marvel coming in the last minute to save the day, complete with a fancy new haircut. With a script from Megan McDonnell, among WandaVision’s authors, the expectation is that Captain Marvel 2 will probably be an improvement on the first, incorporating Carol Danvers properly to the present-day Marvel Cinematic Universe as possibly the strongest Avenger. With a release date of November 11, 2022, Captain Marvel 2 is already deep into pre-production, and now a filming start date has seemingly been shown.
Captain Marvel 2 will start filming in just over two weeks. The new listing sets a filming start date of May 31, also lists London and Los Angeles since the production locations. If accurate, this means that Larson and the remainder of the group will be busy getting in shape for the film and working on the final tweaks to the script and tone of the film. It also hints that production will run through the summer into the fall, and into the sunlight. That also gives Captain Marvel 2 around a year for post-production, which will be normal to get a big-budget CGI-heavy superhero blockbuster.
Average of Marvel productions, Captain Marvel 2 is covered in a veil of secrecy. There are very little known about the storyline, though Parris has stated it’ll explore Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers’ relationship. Besides that, however, data is thin on the ground, and while Zawe Ashton has been verified to play the protagonist, only who she’s playing remains a puzzle. Speculation is that she may not be the major villain, though, when the sequel brings the same trick that Captain Marvel failed using its antagonists.
For now, though, what’s sure is that Captain Marvel 2 is close to shooting. Together with Brie Larson being quite prolific and communicative with fans through her YouTube station, there might be more specific details about the shoot via the star, though audiences might wind up being left in the dark if Marvel follows its normal policy of secrecy.
