Cannes 2021: Everything You Need To Know!

The Cannes Film 2021

The 74th annual Cannes film festival is scheduled to take place from 6 to 17 July 2021. Festival supremo Thierry Fremaux declared last month “Cinema is not dead!”. So it is a rebirth.

Covid appropriate measures have been taken and it is decided that there will be no ‘bises’ the French-styled peck on the cheeks at the fabled steps to the Palais Des Festivals. Many after parties have been canceled and the invite list has been cut to half keeping the social distancing in order.

Cannes is all about the filmmakers and a lot of them are competing for the Palme d’Or after the last year’s edition was canceled due to the pandemic.

Among those submitting themselves to the Cannes are several past winners. Italy’s Nanni Moretti with his new film ‘Tri piani’, Frances Jacques Audiard (Les Olympiads). Also, Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul with his English language debut (Memoria).

Moreover, Cannes announced that Jodie Foster will receive the honorary Palme d’Or at this year’s festival. She will also be the guest of honor at the opening night ceremony. Jodie Foster first attended Cannes when she was 13 with Martin Scorcese’s ‘Taxi driver’, which won the Palme d’Or.

‘Jodie Foster has provided us with an amazing gift by coming to celebrate the return of the festival’. Cannes president Pierre Lescure said in a statement that, “Her aura is unparalleled, she embodies modernity, the radiant intelligence of independence and need for freedom.”

Cannes 2021: Who is the Jury?

The Cannes Film 2021

‘The serpent’ star Tahar Rahim, US Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and ‘Parasite‘ lead Song Kang-Ho are part of this year’s Cannes Film Festivals jury. Led by director Spike Lee, the organizer announced this on Thursday.

The festival has faced a fair amount of criticism over its lack of female representation. But it’s going to be a female majority jury for this year’s festival.

The only woman who has won the Palme d’Or in its history of 73 years is Jane Campion for ‘The piano’ in 1993.

Furthermore, The nine-member jury also features Melanie Laurent, best known for her role in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’. Cannes 2021’s jury also includes a lot of international filmmakers: Brazilian Kleber Mendonca Filho, Austrian Jessica Hausner, and French-Senegalese director Mati Diop.

The jury is completed by French singing sensation Mylene Farmer, who has sold 35 million copies of her album with a 35-year career.

Films to watch out for at Cannes 2021

The Cannes Film 2021

After more than a year, the Festival de Cannes is returning in early June this year. There are going to be a lot of safety protocols including mandatory quarantine. A lot of tests and forms for the festival to be held physically.

The cinema fans couldn’t be more excited after this news and they must be waiting to feast upon this auspicious film festival.

The festival opened up with French auteur Leos Carax’s first English language featured musical film, Annette. Starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard in it. The festival will be closed with Nicolas Bedos’ French film OSS 117.

From Africa with love, starring Jean Dujardin with a lot of people hoping for some irreverent humor from the cinematic renewal of the beloved 1960s series of films.

So the whole festival is packed with some brilliant films. Fans of Thai Maven Apichatpong Weerasethakul will be lining up for his first English feature Memoria starring Tilda Swinton. But the one film that would get the most attention according to me is going to be Jacques Audiard’s Paris, 13th district co-written by Celine Sciamma and starring Noemie Merlant.

Audiard’s films have always been my favorite, including Dheepan(2015), the last 2 episodes of ‘The bureau’ which turned the whole series into a masterpiece.

Rahul Jain is representing India, who already gave us the Sundance winner Machines (2016). Now with the long-standing problem of Delhi pollution, he’s coming up with Invisible Demons. There’s also a Payal Kapadia’s fable A night of knowing nothing, which looks very thoughtful.

I also have high expectations from the Bangladesh-Singapore film Rehana Maryam Noor. The film was directed by Abdullah Mohammed Saad with segments from Singapore’s Anthony Chen and Iranian Master Jafar Panahi.
