What is Bombay Begums all about?
As you see how the name of the series is Bombay Begums, the story is based on the queens of Mumbai. The story is about 5 different women who are ambitious in their own field and face different problems every day, just like the Big Little Lies Season 3 with 5 women facing problems!
In the start we see Rani Irani, who used to be an ordinary bank teller in Kanpur and how she became the Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Bank, after facing all the difficulties with men in the world of banking career. As good her career life is the worst is her personal life, with step kids who hate her and a husband who hasn’t moved on from his dead wife.
Then we witness how Fatima, who works in the same bank, is struggling to balance her personal and professional life, as she has a dissatisfied husband and a desire to be a mother but in the same time love her boss, complicated right? There is more!
Then you see Shai Irani, the step daughter of Rani, who without her mother gets into bad company as her vision the horror dreams of her dead mother, too much for a teenager!! you must pretty much check out Never Have I Ever if you like teen drama
Next, we see Lakshmi best known as Lily, a Bar dancer and also the only mother for her kid, like every other mother tries to place her kid in a top school(English medium), but in spite of having a lot of money the school doesn’t take her kid due to the background of Lily. Disrespected lily then plans to put up a steel factory.
And we see how Ayesha Agarwal, who likes every other ambitious girl doesn’t give up on her dreams even after getting fired from Irani’s bank. Searching for an opportunity in order to boost her profession, meets Lily who wants to open up a steel factory and being driven with too much relentlessness ends up getting sexually accosted by a senior in the same place where she works.
These 5 women are every women out there in the real world facing problems they are facing; gender discrimination, workplace sexual harassment, abusive partners, fear of life, drug abuse and injustice with women. We see how all the women are somehow or other facing difficulties in both personal and professional lives and as there were some inappropriate scenes in the show related to Shai Irani, it became a controversy.
So let us see what the controversy was!
Bombay Begums Controversy
After the release of Netflix, NCPCR (The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights) is asking Netflix to stop streaming this series as there are scenes by Rani’s step daughter Shai (Aadhya Anand), which are influencing and depicting children inappropriately.
The notice sent NCPR to Netflix read that “Netflix should take extra care in relation to children or while streaming any content for children. It’s an order to look into the matter and the streaming of this series should be stopped immediately with a detailed report submitted within 24 hours. If not, the Commission will be obliged to take appropriate action under the provisions of Section 14 of the CPCR Act, 2005.”, but still the Netflix hasn’t taken down the show and still is in controversy.
Reviews and critics
With a not-so-great review of 4.7 on 10 by IMDb, this show has not been up to the mark, where the concept could have been improved and the story was too much exaggerated as there were episodes that were not needed. According to my, the show is a one-time watch on Netflix.
