The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim is recognized as one of the best role-playing games of the last decade. This is the fifth part in the famous series that brings to perfection all the mechanics of the genre. There is a big open world with a lot of secrets and interesting places, and a lot of secondary quests that you can explore till your old age, and an unusual combat system, that allows you to take weapons and spells in two hands.

In the story, you will go to a fictional fantasy universe as Dragonborn, who has to stop the return of these fire-breathing monsters and their leader Alduin.

Dragon Age: Origins

Another great RPG whose world is populated by dragons. It is a story-driven game that started a whole franchise. Its events take place in the fictional kingdom of Ferelden, which is threatened once again by the invasion of demonic creatures “creatures of darkness”. But people, as before, could not hold back the invasion, and now the player must gather a group of heroes and unite different nations against the common enemy.

Dragon Age: Origins is full of tactical battles, plot twists, and charismatic characters with whom you can develop friendly and romantic relationships. The game has been well received by the gaming community and is still considered to be one of BioWare’s best creations.

Grim Dawn

A grim role-playing game set in a world with colors and shades of the Victorian era. The player will take on the role of a hunter of monsters that have emerged from mysterious portals.
Grim Dawn is an isometric action RPG with world exploration, battles with crowds of monsters and constantly changing “loot” (armor, weapons, potions). There is improved physics and dismemberment, which adds gloom to the already oppressive atmosphere.

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium differs from the other candidates in our selection by the absence of combat system. Yes, you can’t throw fireballs and dismember your enemies – instead you will solve all the conflicts with words and charisma.

The storyline tells the story of an alcoholic policeman Harry, who after another drinking spree wakes up without memory in a hotel with a dead body hanging from a tree in the hotel yard. It is up to him to remember why he is here, and to investigate the crime.
All the arguments and actions come down to an extensive dialogue system, where the player will be able to engage various skills developed over the course of the passage.

GreedFall is often compared to Dragon Age, even though it looks like a completely different game. The gamer goes to the fantasy world, recreated in the style of XVII century. He is to explore an island with strange inhabitants that are not afraid of new lethal diseases. But this is not their last feature – they are also under the protection of supernatural beings.

As a wanderer, the player will explore a remote island, search for treasure and fight monsters. In battle are good as standard techniques, and other means – diplomacy, deception and cunning. Through their actions, the gamer will regulate the relationship between the factions, which will eventually lead to one of several finales.

Titan Quest

Not only is old Titan Quest considered one of the best but underrated games in its genre, but it also debuted again in 2016 with an improved Anniversary Edition.
Events are set in Ancient times and are based on Greek mythology. The player will have to explore the ancient world and visit different countries – Egypt, Greece and so on. In his adventures the gamer will fight mythical creatures, using more than 1,000 pieces of unique equipment. Variety does not end here – there are 28 classes, thanks to which you can create a character for your style of play.

Fallout is a series of post-apocalyptic RPGs that take place on scorched wastelands. The player has to get out of the safe haven and go on adventures.
Games of the series, starting with the third part, contain elements of the shooter – the user can lead continuous firefights, or use the tactical system V.A.T.S. The world is open to explore, and in the passing you can pump skills that are useful in communication with the characters, breaking computers and castles for other things.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is developed by the team that once gave the world the wonderful Fallout: New Vegas. The game is set in a sci-fi setting and invites gamers to unravel a massive space conspiracy. The game has its aces up its sleeve. The story is non-linear, there is a satellite control system, and the gamer’s character will suffer from various flaws that he or she chooses. The Outer Worlds was warmly received by gamers and critics and was a highlight of 2019.

The Witcher 3.

What RPG selection would be without Geralt of Rivia? The third installment was not only a gorgeous conclusion to the series, but also one of the best RPGs of the past decade. And the game will please both those who have been following the adventures of Geralt since the beginning, and those who get to know them for the first time in the third part.

In the role of a monster hunter the player is invited to explore the fantasy world, fight the monsters and find Ciri, who has an incredible power capable of destroying the entire world.

Though Stoneshard was released in 2020, it is as if the game has traveled through time. It’s an RPG in an old-school format, in which the player gets to know the life of a medieval mercenary. He has to explore a war-torn kingdom and engage in complex turn-based battles. The game takes into account a lot of details – for example, the character can treat his wounds with potions, alcohol and drugs, and different situations affect his psyche.

The game also boasts a variety of enemies, no class restrictions, plenty of abilities and other mechanics that will make fans of the genre shed a mealy tear. We also recommend you to review the game Crusader Kings 3.

Divinity: Original Sin

Divinity: Original Sin is an isometric fantasy RPG, which all of a sudden had a big impact and has become one of the definitive games of the genre. While in a group of heroes, the player will engage in turn-based battles based on classic mechanics (action point consumption, interaction bonuses, and so on). Spontaneous elements can be combined, which can make the gamer’s fate easier or, conversely, hinder the gamer’s progress.

In other elements Divinity: Original Sin is not inferior to the other candidates of the selection – there is an interesting non-linear plot, advanced role-playing system with an abundance of characteristics, building relationships with the characters.
