The original Avatar was a bona fide phenomenon. With performance capture, luscious CG wallpapers and 3D photography far beyond anything we’d ever experienced before, James Cameron’s epic became the highest-grossing film of all time when it hit cinemas. Success like this tends to breed sequels — but they usually make it into cinemas somewhat faster than this…
Originally slated for 2014, the Avatar 2 is the first of four sequels in creation. It is a return to the beautiful moon of Pandora, in which the native Na’ vi people (the tall blue ones with tails) fought the human invaders who were destroying their land to mine precious”unobtainium”.
One of the numbers, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully, ended up falling for Neytiri, one of the Na’vi and ended up with his understanding permanently downloaded to his”avatar” Na’ vi bodies. Avatar 2 will pick up the couple’s story now they have kids, introducing fresh Na’ vi and humans to the mixture.
But what else can we expect from the film that — before the Avengers: Endgame of 2019 — has been the blockbuster hit of all time? We’ve sent a recon mission to Pandora out to learn everything you need to learn about the release date of Avatar 2, title, plot, cast and much more.
Avatar 2 release date (and Avatar 3, 4 and 5’s release dates)
Do you understand that Star Wars-shaped hole that will be creating December release schedules feel rather empty after The Rise of Skywalker? By 2021 onwards, Avatar sequels are going to be to fill it. 12 years later box office records smashed, Avatar 2 will be making its debut on December 17, 2021.
Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 were composed concurrently and are also in the works, but we won’t have to wait quite as long for people — they’re now slated for December 2023, December 2025 and December 2027 release if you would like to get them in your diary early.
The next three, as-yet-unannounced Star Wars films will be on hand to fulfill Avatar-shaped holes in December release programs in 2022, 2024 and 2026.

Avatar 2 cast: new and returning characters
Additionally, there are surprise yields for Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, whose characters Grace Augustine and General Quaritch both perished in the first movie. Cameron verified to Entertainment Weekly manner back in 2014 which Weaver is coming back as”another and in many ways harder character” — it seems sensible to presume Grace’s return may have something related to her consciousness passing into the Tree of Souls.
Grizzled soldier Quaritch, meanwhile, seems set to be an integral antagonist from the four new films. “I am not going to say exactly how we’re bringing him back,” Cameron told Deadline in 2013, “but it’s a science fiction story after all. His character will evolve into quite unexpected places throughout the arc of their new three-film saga.” It’s worth bearing in mind this quote is from nearly seven decades ago (it’s now a four-film saga), and you never know what could have changed in the meantime.
There are loads of newbies joining the cast, also — such as the reunion with his Titanic star Kate Winslet, who’s playing with a character of Cameron. There are also functions for Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement (Dr. Ian Garvin), Harry Potter’s David Thewlis (Peylak), Star Trek: Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh (Dr. Karina Mogue), The Sopranos’ Edie Falco (General Ardmore), Game of Thrones’ Oona Chaplin (Varang) and Stress the Walking Dead’s Cliff Curtis (Metkayina main Tonowari).
Additionally, there are seven kids. Jake and Neytiri’s kids are played with Jamie Flatters (Neteyam), Britain Dalton (Lo’ak) and Trinity Bliss (Tuktirey), although there are three free-diving Metkayina children confirmed: Bailey Bass (Tsireya), Filip Geljo (Aonang) and Duane Evans Jr (Rotxo). Ultimately, Jack Champion plays with a human teenager born on Pandora, known as Javier”Spider” Socorro.
