Netflix has unveiled the first complete Modified Carbon season two trailer alongside a foreboding new poster. From the world of this ingenious sci-fi series, consciousness could be swapped and uploaded into distinct bodies (called sleeves), which can be used to disappear, find a new lifestyle, or even cheat death. That one is an exclusive privilege of this mega-rich, that can even live eternally in the same set of designer sleeves. The ability to modify sleeves is also a boon for the show and is being used to hand series lead duties around to Anthony Mackie.
The first season followed a Takeshi Kovacs, performed by Joel Kinnaman, who’d spent the last 250 years. He is bought by the unbelievably wealthy Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), that needs Kovacs to solve his murder, a plot thread which quickly entangles with Kovacs’ history for a revolutionary. Kovacs confronts the unequal world he fought to prevent alongside allies like Detective Kristin Ortega (Martha Higareda), who has a link to the prior occupant of Kovacs’ Kinnaman-sleeve, along with the AI operator of a hotel, Poe (Chris Conner). The first season featured three different sleeves for Kovacs and Modified Carbon year two will continue to add to that total.
The new Modified Carbon year 2 trailer throws Mackie’s Takeshi Kovacs into the action and to some mystery surrounding Kovacs’ long-lost adore, the presumed dead Quellcrist Falconer (Renee Elise Goldsberry). The official synopsis released along with the trailer reads: “When a project brings Takeshi Kovacs back to Harlan’s World in a new sleeve, he sees out the world at war – and that his long-lost love lurking in the shadows.” Every season 2 has in store for Kovacs, he’ll be doing it with a few upgrades as the trailer highlights that this new Mackie-sleeve comes specially designed with features like rapid healing and innovative reaction time. Despite being far away from the base of operations of your AI he’ll also do it together with the return of Poe.
This season will introduce a whole host of fresh challenges, the biggest possibly is teased towards the end of the trailer when Kovacs’ unique sleeve (Will Yun Lee) is seen pursuing him, signifying the first time that sleeve has appeared from the series outside of a flashback. These new challenges are given some extra weight with the newest poster Netflix tweeted that includes a crumbling Mackie and the tagline: “Ashes to ash. Dust to dust.” Check out the poster above.
The first season of Altered Carbon was a mind-bending and entertaining charge that mixed the dystopia of Bladerunner with big-budget action thrills along with a Black Mirror-like vision of the horrific complications advanced technology can bring. This next chapter appears like it’s going to kick up all those elements into an 11 with long-dead revolutionaries and the coming back in the fold. Netflix has shown a devotion to enlarging the Altered Carbon franchise therefore it’s exciting to see where they’ll go with it. The wait to find out how the new puzzle unfolds won’t be long since the Altered Carbon year 2 release date is set for later this season.
